The differences
Before going into detail, let us inform you that the difference between canoe and kayak is simple. The basic difference is the position in the watercraft where a paddler either sits or stands and the shape of the paddle he or she uses to propel it.  Now take a closer look at each of the differences in detail.

The paddles
The users of canoes use a flat or single-bladed paddle to navigate it through lake, ocean or any waterbody. However, kayakers use double-bladed twisted or curved paddle to ride the vessel. The shape of the paddle determines how the boat or watercraft will move through the water body. So, before choosing a particular boat keep paddle shape in mind. You need to learn and apply two different navigating skills for each of them.

Sitting position

The paddlers of canoes half-knees or kneels inside the water vessel. However, when it comes to kayak, kayakers sit on a flat seat while stretching their legs in front of their body.

Structure of the vessel
The structure of the two vessels is also different. Canoes have an exposed deck. This means the inside of the vessel is uncovered and open. Kayaks, on the contrary, feature a closed deck. It means the inside of the vessel is enclosed

Weight of the boat
Kayaks weigh lighter and narrower in shape. In contrast, canoes are wider and heavier. Consequently, they require more space in the water to navigate. They are also more stable. However, kayaks are narrower and feature slightly upward and curved stern making them easier to maneuver.

Speed
Kayaks travel faster than canoes since they are more agile than the late type of vessels. However, an experienced paddler with great expertise in canoeing can make the speed of it as fast as a kayak.

These are the basic differences between canoes and kayaks. However, since both types of vessels are a great choice of athletes, they are used in different sporting events. Let us know about one of these competitions.

The audience of the event enjoys three different events for kayaks and canoes. Each of the events is unique in terms of the number of participants take part in a particular racing competition. If it is a C2M 500m racing, that means it is a canoe racing where the winning athlete or athletes need to reach a finish line that is 500 meters away from the starting line.
